The V-iOn will help in Spain’s transition towards a more sustainable energy model.

The main activity of the project consists of scaling up a vanadium flow storage system from 40 kWh to 1 MWh and its installation and validation will be carried out by Gamesa Electric in a hybrid renewable plant in La Plana (Zaragoza).

This technology is developed by Invinity, which will provide the base technology for the battery.

What is a Flow battery?

A flow battery is a type of battery that stores energy in two electrolyte solutions contained in separate tanks. These solutions flow through an electrochemical cell, where ion exchange takes place across a membrane, generating electricity. 

Advantages of flow batteries

  • Durability and longevity: they have an extended lifetime and can perform numerous charge and discharge cycles without significant degradation.
  • Safety: Unlike other storage technologies, these batteries are non-flammable.

In this case, the battery is charged from a renewable source and returns the energy to the grid on discharge process.
